These girling master cylinder reservoir extensions are a popular addition to many open wheel and historic racing cars.
The purpose of these master cylinder extensions is to provide a larger capacity of hydraulic fluid, ensuring the system never suffers from unwanted air entering the system during hard cornering or bumpy track surfaces.
Another added benefit of a larger fluid capacity is additional recovery time in a situation where a brake fitting or line may be leaking or loose. We’ve previously experienced a racing situation where a car made contact with another car on track and suffered a damaged brake line. In this instance the driver felt the pedal go “soft” before going to zero - giving the driver ample time to return to the pits safely. This was only possible by having enough fluid remaining in the reservoir.
These extensions work on girling master cylinders with integral reservoir (among other brands) and take just minutes to install - remove the existing lid and replace it with the extension, tighten the clamping ring and fill.
